Severe Flooding...

1979 Fairmont Station Wagon, 3.3L, Six, Auto. Carburetor (1 barrel Holley modle 1946) is extremely flooding. I rebuilt with kit, set float, the whole deal, but no improvement. Fuel pump checks OK. This thing is actually making puddles of fuel in the intake manifold... After I remove the carb you can look right into the manifold and see the fuel. Any ideas?

How well did you clean the carb body before rebuilding? I've made that mistake in the past...The float valve area is very suseptible to being dirty. If the hole where the float valve closes off the fuel supply is not REAL clean, it will not completely prevent the fuel coming in. Also I have had a bad float needle or needle rubber O ring is bad and cause the same problem. It's simliar to when a water faucet seat goes bad, just keeps dripping because it doesn't completely close off.

Did the rebuild include a new Float?? Sometimes the Float itself can get a leak in it, allowing it to fill with gas and sink, thus allowing gas to continue to flow. as long as there is some residual pressure in the lines after the motor is shut off.

I would double check the float, the check valve, etc to see if it is all in good order. Take the float out, shake it to make sure you don't hear any "sloshing" inside. If not then the float should be OK. Next check where the float check valve/needle goes. Make sure it is as clean as possible. Something in the float area is the culprit. Also double check the float level setting. Doesn't take much there to cause this issue as well.
