The guy at the shop said most other places would be asking closer to 3k for all the stuff done on my car, but i want to know if he was lying or not. I thought it did seem reasonably priced though. Ill type up exactly what the labor and parts were from the final receipt.

Labor:
1. Engine runs poorly
Pumpred out old gas and put in new gas and tune up engine
No good. Bad comrpession.
Remove and disassemble engine
Had block bored and honed. 0.020"
Had crankshaft ground. 0.010/0.010"
Cylinder head cracked. Found good used head. Had valve job performed.
Oil pump, camshaft and lifters all good.
Reassembled engine with new pistons, moly rings, new timing set, bearings and gaskets.
Replaced all freeze plugs.
Repaired harmonic balancer with sleeve.
Installed new water pump, thermostat and coolant.
Blocked off heater nipples - no heater.
Had radiator flushed and soldered bad joint.
Replaced both motor mounts and three belts.
New air and oil filter.
Unclogged restriction in exhaust manifold.
Repaired vacuum hoses and routing.
Adjusted carburetor and timing.
Took car through emission testing - passed.
$500.00
2. Replaced front transmission seal while engine was out.
Replaced dipstick tube o-ring
Replaced rear band adjuster sealing nut. Adjust band.
Replace pan gasket and filter.
Refill with new transmission fluid.
No more leaks, transmission works good.
$85.00
3. Replaced both battery cables.
Total Labor $585.00

That's actually not too bad. I don't know what the shop rate is there, but where I currently live, the cheapest rate is 110 bucks an hour. That'll put it in perspective for ya. That's why I do as much of my own work as I can.

That seems like a good deal to me too, I would want atleast that for doing all that work.

FYI at my old work we put a new 4.3L 6 in a blazer, it was a rebuilt short block that cost $1300, the heads were good so we put them back on, and used all the same injection and everything else. it was a hell of alot more of a pain in the butt to do then a foxbody.

Came to $6K. So I think you came out pretty good. I will probably have the same amount into my 5L swap by the time its done.

I figured it was a pretty good deal. The only bad part is the guy took a long time (about 3 months, almost 4). And he didnt call during the entire thing except when they found the head was cracked. Otherwise i probably wouldve had them bore it out some more, put some better quality pistons in it, and mill the intake to accept a two barrel so i dont have to use an adaptor later when i put on a two barrel. I almost had him put on one of the classic inline heads and intakes, but i didnt have the extra money for that.

if you are satified with the work, the car drives fine, you got what you paid for, dont go remorsing, instead rejoice. we all feel bad about spending money, but if you got what you paid for.......well done.

Is this an inline 6?
You could've had a hotter cam and some head work done, like backcutting the intake valves and pocket porting. Milled to compensate for new thicker head gasket and 9:1CR.
There is also an adjustable double roller chain for it too.

Only thing I see there is he charged you for 11 quarts of 10w30 oil.

yeah, i know. there is a lot of stuff i wish i coudlve done. bored it out more, oversized valves (or backcut the stock like you said) adjustable rocker arms, bigger cam , double roller timing chain, port divider, all kinds of stuff, but just couldnt afford it lol. ive been studying this engine for a long time, and know its got hidden powers, thats why i kept it instead of swapping to something bigger.

and about the oil, im guessing he put new oil in to flush it out, the put more in to leave in.
