| For some reason, I just hauled off and bought a Fairmont that I absolutely, positively didn't need.
It's an '81 boxtop, 6-cyl auto with 116,000 miles. There's a little surface rust, but only one hole that I could find, where the rear wheelhouse meets the trunk floor. Plenty of solid metal around it, so it'll be an easy fix. Silly, silly boy to buy another one right now when there's so much to do to on what I already have, but you just don't stumble upon these that often, and this one will be a great recipient for the "original 302 4-speed" project if I ever decide to do it. The interior is even the right color, so I'll be able to use some of the bits to make it look right.
If I decide that it was a bad choice, my dad already offered to buy it for a hundred more than I have in it.
I still think I'm nuts, though.
Later, Mike. | |

LOL no offence taken. Stock is deffentally boring, as you can tell by the stockness of both my cars lol. I just think it would be cool to have a nice stock example one day...

Maybe stock on the outside....my first fairmont had a nicely built 302 and sounded real good. Funny thing was, it looked real beat. Dents in every panel, plywood where the sunroof belonged....whitewalls and rusty steel rims. When I would pull into a gas station people would be looking all over for the car that had the healthy sounding engine.....they were expecting nice and shiny...not faded and full of dents. Out of all of my cars that I've ever owned/built...this one was the most fun. My zephyr is my tribute car to that, except on steroids...nothing fancy. Stock on the outside....strictly business underneath.

| You know, Turbo, I used to have exactly the same thing. People would be looking *around* my car for what sounded good. It had dark blue paint that I couldn't keep from oxidizing to purple, and a vinyl top that was so cracked that moss wanted to grow in it all the time. | |

I'll bet you hurt a lot of feelings in that car...my absolute favorite people to prey on were the people who owned the Iroc z camaros, formula firebirds, and the corvettes...they always wanted a little stoplight action, but after the shift into second, it was usually over.

| My favorite thing to say about the unsuspecting prey was always this:
"Yeah, you pull up to some dude in an import or something, and his passengers laughing, saying to his buddy, 'Hey, it has 5.0 on the side (I had installed some 5.0 badges).' Then, after the light changes, he says, 'Oh, look! It has one on the back, too.'"
Then there was the night (probably one of the first nights that I cruised with it after installing the good motor) that I pulled up next to an early '70s Mopar with an Air Grabber hood. I was young and full of myself, and his Air Grabber was up, so I asked him if he wanted to race. He laughed at me. Not just chuckled, full on laughed. While he was laughing, the light turned green, so I left. Hard. When I pulled up to the light on the next block, he pulled up and stopped about a length back in the other lane...with the Air Grabber down. Talk about putting your tail between your legs. I just wonder how much of a hard time he got from the dude in the other Mope that was behind him.
