PostSubject: I am finnally Back!!   Sun Dec 29, 2013 6:04 pm

Wow, after so much going on and then computer issues I am finally back. It took getting an new computer. I lost almost everything.....I miss the most is my Bookmarked web sites. I had so much great info.
Any how I am back, not much change to the car other then I need to pull the tank out and clean it. think its full of crap from this great fuel we buy these days.
I am getting itchy to work on so many things, but I have so much going on too. Tough to find time and cash flow, even tho my new job is about double the pay it seems to be just enough to balance our living costs.
Doesn't help I have Dad's '61 Thunderbird in my shop. We put in our own version of a hydro boost kit. He was talking of doing it but had no idea where to start. I did some research and found a kit you can by for $600.00 and so I found parts out of a few vehicles and went looking for them. After $50.00 we had 3 hydro boosters and all the parts to go with. So we had 3 choices to work with and boiled down to which one would mount the easiest.
We had it done in no time and it was so easy. Has me thinking about it for my car !!!!!

Yes, and it works great on the 4 wheel drums. The old set up was just not enough for the heavy car. He now has control.

Welcome back! I'll need you to go study all 11 pages of my "update on this year's projects" thread, so you're up to speed, thanks.  Laughing

I'd settle for ABOVE FREEZING.  Mad

Or maybe tax refund time. Our tax guy isn't taking appointments until March though. (SSSSIIIGGGHHHHHH)!! Then at least I can buy tires and get my suspensions project going.

Uhhhh, I don't really think about that. Laughing I had to pull the tank one more time after I took it off the road this year, so it's pretty empty. Hasn't caused me too many problems in the spring. I have a dead battery more often than I have problems with gas.

yeah, I was wondering what you do, I suppose it would be ok, but you have to keep those batteries charged, it's a bad thing for a battery to discharge slowly on its own, they can gat sulfated and difficult to bring back to a full charge.

Yeah, I usually bring my battery in. It's the years that I forget that I have a problem. Good thing the guys at Auto Zone like me. They've been willing to warranty me a new one despite it being my mistake.

Currently, my car runs like crap because of shitty fuel and now I need to drop the tank and clean it, rebuild the carb too. I even had Fuel Stable in the tank. best thing ....run it and run it often.

Sometimes I worry about the coolant freezing and that causing problems if I want to start it up, but I guess that doesn't make a lot of sense because if it did freeze, you'd have much bigger problems to deal with.  Laughing

As long as you have 50/50 coolant mix, you will be fine.

I prefer using the "Thexton" hydrometers, they are also temperature compensating. you can get the from Matco or Snap-on. I have been using them for coolant & batteries for years.
when held towards the light, you get a clear view of the coolant, offering and opportunity to check for corrosion or contamination.
Another thing you might want to do is use distilled water when you mix the coolant solution, not only does it make the coolant look cleaner longer, it cuts down on electrolysis.
you can check for electrolysis using a volt meter.....

Not as cheap, but I buy the 50/50 premixed......easy and ready to go.

I know Prestone does.

Back when I worked in a shop, the way we used to do flushes, we'd do it forward, not back. Just opened the radiator drain and stuck a hose in at the cap and started the engine. Let the water pump do the work. So, what I usually do is add a full bottle of 100% after doing that the theory being the block is still full of water, and then let it bubble and top it off with 50/50 after that. Do you guys think that's a sound method?

there's loads of different ways to do a drain & refill, however you still need to know the current mixture in the cooling system when mixing the replacement coolant, otherwise you could end-up with a diluted mixture.
quite often people just add water to the cooling system when doing a service. over period of time this will weaken the mixture as well as offer opportunity for corrosion.
you can LOOK at coolant and think all is good, this is totally inaccurate, and the colors can be influenced by light. green coolant can look great in the radiator, but when you use a hydrometer, and expose it to light, weak solutions and contamination soon become apparent.
there is more to coolant than just freeze protection.

Yeah... I've been lazy about that. I've just driven the car so little, I don't really think about regular maintenance.

well I suppose that when the weather is that bad like you guys have it, it's not really worth cruising a 30 year old car around so somebody can run into it.
it just seems to me that my luck is crappy, and it's always the small cheap things that take a dump and cost a fortune down the line.
you guys must have some pretty good rustproofing measures over there....
