took a trip to douglas az today to scope out my latest acquisitions, the 95 & 97 stangs. well it turns out the 95 is axctaully a 96, that got my blood pressure elevated, there is a lot of difference so far as resale value for the frt spindles, then it seems as though there was more damage on both vehs than described......
both engines are intact, both the air flow meters are gone...i can still break the v-6 for eng, trans, alternator, brakes, diff, spindles etc, but the real reason i went was for the v-8 stang, loads of mysteries surrounding this one, only 21k true miles according to the speedo??? no ignition keys, pats module & receiver missing ,exhaust cut of right behind the precats, k-member may be damaged, trans pan bent but not leaking, oe wheels missing etc…etc..etc…the bad part is The v-6 doesn’t have pats, so I cant swap the modules over, now I got to spend more dough just to see if it runs properly.
I’m probably going to take them next weekend, if it turns out to be a bad deal, I can still make my dough back by breaking them. I just get tired of haggling and listening to the b/s. it’s not easy getting rid of things like it used to be, and shipping can be crippling.
If it all goes south with the 4.6 I may put the 4r70w from the v-6 into the Fairmont as it has overdrive and the transmission bolts up to a 5.0,even the 5.0 flywheel bolts onto the torque converter. I’ll just have to pony-up for a baumann controller, it would be nice to have over drive, then I could get rid of my c-4 and 2.26 rear end and put a 3.37 or 3.55 in.
I suppose the good news is that the speed control modules are both there, both pcms are there & both ccrm’s are there.
Time will tell.

Well the mustangs arrived on Sunday, the v-6 started, went down the street and ran itself up onto the trailer and off. The 4.6 won’t start, but at least rolls.
The interior looks pretty good on the v-6, except the air bags are blown-out, so I’ll be keeping the interior for the Fairmont.
I’m not going to change everything over at the same time like I did last time, dash, engine suspension etc. this time I’ll change to the hydro-boost, wiring, engine & transmission, I’m still trying to get my mind made-up about which k-member to use, stock or AJE.
All of this depends on the 4.6 engine. I put a wrench to the crankshaft bolt and the engine rotated!!! I’ve already purchased the PATS transceiver, it should be here in a couple of days, I found another Ford dealer that had one at 50% off.
First I will perform the pats programming procedure. Then I will perform the power tests for the coils, circuit 361, ccrm & fuel pump. If the fuel pump is good, I’ll disable the fuel pump as I don’t want to damage the pump, because I don’t know what’s in the tank or if it’s clean. If all goes well, that’s cool.
Next I’ll fill the engine with oil to the top of both valve covers as it hasn’t ran in 7 years, this is to lubricate all the internals, remember the cams are in the heads on the 4.6. After a couple of hours, I’ll drain it all out and refill it.
Next, I’ll remove the oil filter and force prime the oil pump with a lube gun form the bulk oil supply and lube the bearings again. Afterwards, I’ll crank the engine to see if the oil light goes out.
If this goes ok, I’ll remove the fuel line at the front of the engine, and fit a pressurized container used for injector flushing filled with gasoline to start the engine, I really hope this part goes ok!!
If all the tests prove positive, I’ll start to disassemble the GT for parts. If it goes south, I’ll dismantle the car for salvage and lick my wounds.
I won’t be swapping the PI heads onto this 4.6 until I put some miles on it, the 4.6 out of the Mustang has 27k on it, and the PI heads have 30k, I don’t want to screw-up the good PI heads in case this engine goes belly-up.
I think I have all my bases covered for all eventualities, so let’s see what happens.
I hate to say it, but I am actually considering swapping the Patina Naturalle for a fresh paint job, Stymee’s Mont is a good looker, in fact by looking at the pictures, his paint looks as smooth as glass. I just gotta find the right scheme.

well i've liked this body style style since it came out. usually i lose interest in a couple of years, i've always thought that the coupes should be red or white i had a white one with the split blue vinyl top when we were in England, it was our first american new car, now when i finished with this engine swap, i think its time for paint. i'm thinking red with forward & reversed white starsky & hutch stripes, but maybe in a digital style. i thought about red or dark blue with the old European tigerstripe pattern.
at the moment i'm tryng to knock out a couple of hybrid ignition systems using the HEI modules to replace the dura-spark systems, im trying to gather all the conectors to make it as close to plug & play as possible. when i did it to mine years ago, it really made a difference, quicker starting, more power , beter fuel milage etc.
i am an auto electrician by trade, so i like playing with upgrading alternators & starters, power door lox, alarms ETC swapping newer parts onto older cars, sometimes it's cheaper to build it yourself than to buy it.
with the old girl coming down with cancer, it put a halt to all the side jobs and the fairmont went from project to just sitting around to daily driver, cash is tight, luckily i've got a job, and fortunately i had plenty of salvage to get rid of at the time, scrap iron and aluminun is up again, so maybe the economy is starting to recover, maybe i can buy some more mustangs and break them up for salvage as some are worth more in parts than a running car if you can the smashed ones.
this car has been a never ending project, many time times just using stock salvage parts, like the power trunk latch, suspensions & brakes, audio, steering, power seats, dash, salvage is always cheaper and since parts interchange with most fox bodies, there is an abundance of parts and ideas.
i gave my buddy an intact 80 model mustang with 302 and a c5 trans, now he wants the 3.8 and 4r70w with injection, fuel tank & pump, 4 wheel disc brakes out the the green mustang for his kids first car. thats gonna be a cool swap-job. yeah, its a 3.8, but how many 80 models have a 3.8 eng.
it's not about how much money you spend, or how many name brand boxes laying on your garage floor, for me its about having FUN. and swapping stuff around. i'd like to have a watts link, or kick ass hood struts, and maybe that will happen, but what has eluded me for years is power windows!!!
there are some cool cars like AUGS, DETROIT IRON, just to mention a couple. i met FOX81 & EIGNUB in Tuscon, 2 really cool cool guys!! some of the previous members had some great cars as well.
this is a good site, i joined it on the previous site like a lot of others, i just wish there was more traffic and people having fun with their cars. theres been some good info out on several mods that really sound good.
theres no stupid questions or dumb ideas, and theres plenty of knowledge and experience from people who have done things to their Fairmonts.
anyway, when i get this car painted, i'll probly change my mind again, and swap the red for a white with blue tiger stripes scheme. however; power windows would probbly just make my day.
have fun everyone!!!

Thanks for the compliment. It looks like you have a lot of good work ahead of you. I wish I enjoyed the work like you apparently do. I only do it myself because I can't trust anyone else to do what I want. I hope it all works out, and you end up with the car you want at the end of it all.

Keep up the good work.

Later,
Mike.

I drilled out the lock cylinder, which cost me 3 cobalt drill bits, something very hard, like another drill bit was lodged in the cylinder; anyway I got it out without damaging the steering column.
I then checked out various circuits in both fuse boxes that had blown fuses. I can only imagine that there was a sale on 20 & 25 amp fuses when the last person tried to get the engine running. The car was hit pretty hard on the right side and in the front; I don’t know if it was hit twice or just once???
I spent some time tracing down the shorts, this is important as this car like so many of the other older ones use a CCRM to control the PCM, fuel pump, 361 circuit O2’sensors, fan and other crap. There is no history on the car other than it was impounded and somebody was trying to get it running and chopped some wires…. Anyway, I got all the circuits up except the shifter, because I need to spend more time figuring this one out, I know its January, but it was hot, and the car isn’t going anywhere.
Found a couple of “S” type pats keys in my tool box, the keys were close enough that we could cut them to match each other. (rule #1: never throw anything away, keep all junk and your marriage will never be boring) and then I made an ignition lock cylinder from used parts,(verification not to thro junk away) programmed the pats system, it came up with no further action. I plan to use the pats system, so this is important to me.
I scanned for codes, and there are some codes, ECT, HO2S sensors which are missing, air flow meter which is smashed, but these codes won’t stop the engine from running. I managed to perform a KOEO (key on engine off) test and when the fan kicked on, it almost sawed thru the radiator, which wasn’t leaking at the time. (That was close, but nice to see it still spins, even though it’s broken!!)
Now that I’ve got the engine management system up, I can focus on dumping the fuel and testing the pump.
This seems like a lot of work for an engine that may be junk, but it’s been kinda fun.
I filled the engine with engine & transmission oil mixture up to the top of the valve covers until it came out of the pcv hole & let it sit. Did the drain & prime job, & filled it with oil.
The fuel pump is junk, but I kinda expected that.
I filled the injector flush machine with gasoline, and hooked it to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail to let it fill & purge the fuel rails.
When I tried to start it with the key, it was hesitant at first, but it fired up with no nasty noise other than the a/c clutch hub is bent and 2 dead cylinders. I replaced #2 & #6 plug, and it runs pretty well, it runs better with the airflow meter disconnected, there was a lot of smoke from the engine, some from the exhaust, and some from spilled oil, but it has all cleared now.
I need to put some more time on the engine and try the trans before I drop it out, however, it looks promising.

I managed to drive the v8 around a bit, I was extremely pleased the transmission operated, the car is pretty mangled in the front, and with the flush canister and air bottle hooked up it looks like it’s on an I V. time is limited as the flush canister only holds about a pint.
When I have more time, I want to cut a hole in the trunk to allow removal of the fuel pump so I can empty the tank, the pump may still be good, I won’t know until I can pull it, clean it and test it after putting fresh fuel in the tank.
The v6 mustang runs pretty good. I have most of the major assemblies sold or on hold for sale including the k-member, which may be the same as the v8.

i got a set of brand-new rear pads given to me, a dude purchased a set for his cobra, and they didnt fit as the cobra has ventilated discs, the dealership gave him a new set, so i got the ones that didnt fit his car, that was lucky!!1
another guy dropped off a 4r70w oil pan for my transmission, that was lucky, because no junkyard around here has the tranny pan.
niether guy offered to install the parts, oh well.....
i had the mustang up on the lift, the k-member is bent pretty bad, even the floor pans are bent, thats stupid as i sold the one out of the v-6. the fuel pump is good, the cats are junk, as when the car had frontal impact, the exhaust concertinaed right where it comes out of the cat, we tried to repair it so we could weld some exhaust pipe to it, but that was a big let down after a lot of work.
i'm probably going to join a local mustang club,we may have some parts we can echange.
all in all, things are going slow, if not stalled, cant seem to find a another fairmont shell, not even a box top, i dont want to destroy all the work ive done on the red-one,that just doesn't make sense, although it would be cheaper. i suppose the 5.0 & pcm is worth a couple of bones, and i could sell the interior, it just seems a lot of time & work would go down the pan.
anyway thats where im at, basically stalled and looking for more parts for the time being.
