| It's a long story, but I need to know if the '80ish Thunderbird has the same fuel tank placement as our 'monts. The fabricator is too far away to take the car to, but he has access to an '80 Bird.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike. | |

| what are you trying to do? are you going fuel injection? do the fuel senders have the same resistance values? i know where a mid 80's euro bird is in benson.
the 1980 model t-bird (big bird)has the filler on the left side where the mid 80's or around 83 (euro bird) has the filler on the r/side. i'm thinking the mid 80's used the cfi injection system, where the early 80's were still using the mechanical fuel pump.
i believe the cfi used a low pressure fuel pump in the tank, the later efi or eec IV had a higher pressure pump.
i know in the past, some guys were using the 84 & up ltd fuel tanks, i'm thinking these were all low pressure fuel injected pumps i think. or was there 2 pumps, lift pump & pressure pump, but there was a difference in the trunk floor pans, as early fairmonts had the spare tire in the center rear and later fairmonts had the spare tire mounted in the upper right rear of the trunk.
there were a few guys who mentioned using this tank on the original fairmont site. it's a shame we cant access that site for the archived info.
the later mustang tanks have a difference in resistance values for the fuel sender, and i believe the guys were changing to the mustang clusters to match. i think you have to change the pigtail on the cluster but the cluster was supposed to fit inside the appeture, i kinda remember they were using the cluster trims as well?????
you can fit the mustang tank in the fairmonts, but i had to cut the spare tire well out and raise it up to fit the tank level in the car, as my spre is located in the center rear. and the mustang tank is pretty much the same up to 2004, even thought they have different filler pipe sizes and pumps fitted, the early ones have seperate sender & pump, and the later ones have a one piece unit with pump & sender assy.
the resistance values for the early models was 8 ohms full & aroung 75/80 ohms m/t, later senders on the mustangs resistance is 15 & 155 or 15 ohms for full and 158 or so form/t.
i'm hoping to go to benson next weekend to pick up another car, i'll ask if i can look at it.
i hope this helps, and hasnt confused you...... | |

| Fangar, thanks for the excellent writeup, but all I care about at this time is the physical location of the tank.
I want to install a Watts link, but the one I want uses the quad shock holes as part of the mounting. This doesn't work with the right side offset of the Fairmont tank. The fab shop is too far away to take the car to (he's in Wisconsin, I think, and I'm in Pennsylvania), but he has access to a 1980 Thunderbird. If the fuel tank is in the same place, he could use that car for fitment, then send the result to me. If not, then he will have to send me the parts unfinished, and I will have to figure out the mounting brackets for myself, and weld them all together. I'd much rather have him do it, for time efficiency and weld quality reasons.
Unless one of you guys has a Fairmont that is close to this guy's shop, and would be willing to let him use it as a mule. Who knows...maybe you'd want a Watts link too!
So, any help that I can get will be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike. | |

| Well, it's official...
I have the only Fairmont in the state (country? world?!?) with a 3-link/watts rear suspension.
It's like a whole new car, and I haven't even gotten to really push it yet.
Later, Mike.
