some of you guys with the v-8's may be interested in upgrading to the later style ford oem mini starter. it's a cool upgrade to do, and the new style oem starter uses less amps to crank the car, its a lot tidier and it's also a lot quieter.

all you need is a starter from a 93 up 5,0, mustang, grand marquis, f 150 etc. the new oem ford starter has the same bolt pattern as the old humongous oem starter, its dead easy to wire and cheap to do.

the wiring is as simple as simple can be, buy a long cable from checker, autozone, napa, i think mine was 72 inches long, (but i also moved my battery to the other side, you guys with the oem set up can use a shorter piece of cable) you will need to run the cable and the solenoid wire together, (so this is the oportunity to use some 3/4 in corrugated tubing)

run the wire from the starter to the starter relay positive side and cut the wire to fit, and solder on a battery cable eylet, and your done.

remove the old starter wire and put the solenoid wire where the old starter wire was, and add an eyelet, now turn the key, dont it sound sweet!!

there's loads of way to wire them, but they are all pretty much the same, ive never done one on a 6 cylinder or four banger, i'm not certain if the manuals would use the same starter or if there is a manual starter, but i done see why it wouldnt work.

and yes, that means the starter has 12 volts all the time, it's the solenoid that activates the starter. on the older oem unit the starter wire was not live until the starter relay was activated.

I've done it on several cars. Another benefit is that the starter solenoid no longer carries the main start load, just a smaller relay load so it lasts longer.

yeah, and it takes less amps to crank in the winter, and as it seems to spin spin the engine over quicker, it may have more torque.
