PostSubject: 3G Alternator swap   Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:09 am

Anyone here running a 3g?

I want to try this swap and made a harness like the one in this ad:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270456601715&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Where should the green be hooked in, and what do you do with the old regulator and harness?

the green wire goes to alt light, and you pull all the wiring out from the regulator, make sure you use a fuse or fusible links. i've done loads of these and they are great!!!!
dont use the original alternator wires from the battery, start with new wire.

Thanks, I've been searching around and have found a couple of sites with different approaches. Here's one that's pretty good:

yeah ive seen that one before, it's pretty generic, but the lg/r wire need to go to the idiot light, not the starter.
there are loads of ways to wire the fuse up, i have used 140 and 170 amp fuses, generally run this wire directly from the starter relay, then using eylets to the fuse holder, then an eylet from the fuse to the 6 or 4 guage wire that goes to the alternator which has another eylet for the alternator.
i generally use the 1997 mustang v-6 3g alternators and wiring diagrams, it fits perfectly in the mounts with a little work in the top bolt mounting, it's pretty specific about the fuses as well.
you've chosen the right alternator set-up. go for it.

Hey hey got 'er done!
I can't see any reason to not do this swap if you have the older style alternator.

Now to get that darn mechanical fan gone!
