so do we actually have to basically take out the entire dash to take out and replace the ehater core on cars that came with factory a/c? if thats the case i dont think ill be doing it.

yeah it's the shittest job on a a fairmont you'll ever do
rem ove a pillar trims
rem all screws from around windshield
take the collumn out
rem any center braces
loosen or rem some connectors in the eng bay to give the main loom some slack
rem the a pillar dash bolts
remove the cables from the heater temp controls
pull the dash back a bit & swing the r/side of the dash over and set it on the frt seat, or support it with a jack stand
rem the core.
i think there were 2 plenums on the car, one requires loosening the plenum to gain access to the upper core bolts, but i cant remember for sure. (or you cant flat rate the the cover)
i can get you a genuine ford heater core if you like, (on the cheap)
you can have someone else do the job, but on this old of a car, things are going to break, so dont get to freaked. thats why i changed to the mustang dash, my became a jigsaw puzzle with too many pieces.
just be patient when removing things, yake your time
now is the time to choose another dash for your car!! mustang cougar t-bird.........
somebody else will probably chime-in with some more helpfull ideas

yeah, that looks like what the mauals where saying i have to do. i think i'll wait until next winter to fix it then. i just got the a/c up and going again, and thats a bit more important here in az, wouldnt you agree? lol

A/C is a given on any car in Az.

The heater core is something I really don't want to tackle. Thankfully my current dash is pretty much toast so when I remove it I won't have to worry about breaking it. Then in goes my nice crack free un-cut dash.

hey if you got a pristine dash board, get in in there!!! you definitly right about a/cboth of you guys have some nice cars, maybe later when we have some time, we can all get together and make a day out of putting in the heater core!!! if iether of you guys need parts and ford still offers them, throw me an e-mail. best of luck. i've be amassing a load of parts on the sly, hope to do some more mods soon, i guess i'll keep the heap as i still cant find those cougars......do they exist ??????, a fairmont that runs is worth more than 2 cougars i cant find!!! i can find the human cougars, but they are usually high maintenance, at least with the monty, i can just switch it off and walk away.

Damnit... I have to do this too, but AZ might be a bit of a drive just to hang out on heater core replacement day lol. Damn A/C... One day I want to make it work, I wonder if the lines will bolt up to a 5L's A/C compressor..

Which mustang dash did you end up using?...So far while working on my car, I've broken my dash in at least 4 different places....post some pictures if you can.

He has the 87-93 dash in his Futura, it looks pretty sweet. Wish I would have taken a picture of it when we were all together.

sorry fellas, been off the net for a while, had a trip to Florida that was really nice, but the wife ended up with another stent, 3rd one in less than 18 months. that’s a total of 4!! She had no symptoms other than pressure on the shoulders. They can’t figure out why this is happening. She’s ok at the moment, but my time has been focused mainly on her. We’ve been married nearly 30 years and she is the only reason I am breathing today, although she works with children child psychology usually works with me as I am kinda like peter pan.
When you do the dash mod or any other mod to your Fairmont, you can follow the beaten path for most things, or you can blaze a new trail. There is no right way or wrong way so long as it works and it’s safe.
I always use ford parts for reliability and ease of repairs. There are loads of aftermarket parts out there, and quite costly as well. Because I drive the hell out of my car and I don’t want to get stuck 150 miles from home on a Sunday needing a fuel pump or something, I insist on using oem parts.
Anyway back to the a/c.
Back in the day there were two evaporator cores. One had the expansion valve screwed to it right out of the fitting at the firewall. You gotta get rid of that one because the expansion valve limits your options, and use the core with the spring lock fittings. Once you have the ac evaporator and heater cores installed you are pretty well set.
Yes the mustang dash pretty well fits into the car with minimal problems. However the problems begin with the wiring and engine fuel delivery selection. You have to have a clear plan as to what your goals are.
I would suggest that you obtain a mustang donor car, (I stripped my 93 convertible) and be prepared to “down” your Fairmont. (This is a great way to get rid of that nasty assed foot operated parking brake.)
Just a few pointers and hints: strip the mustang down to get all the dash, seats, loom,console carpet etc.
When you get the donor dash out, you want to repair any damaged wiring while it’s on the ground, pull all the airbag crap out of the wiring loom, and anything else you don’t want or need. i had to add about 4ft to my efi loom inside the car to fit the pcm under the driver seat. (that really pissed me off because I made the loom in the house and planned to put the pcm in the kick panel like on the mustang, but I was concerned the chassis integrity/strength would be compromised with all the cutting that needed to be done.
Strip the entire interior from the Fairmont except the right side rear interior ΒΌ trim panel and headliner. This includes the a/c plenum and brake pedestal.
Mark all the Fairmont parts you are keeping for future reference.
Cut the hole for the efi loom on the right side and the hole for the main loom wiring on the left side. Youll have to enlarge the hole on the driver side for the main wiring loom, be careful, as I sawed thru my brake lines!!!
Mount the brake or brake/clutch pedestal.
Run the loom for the efi into the cabin, If you are not running the efi, go ahead and install the a/c plenum. You can use the entire a/c plenum in your mont from the stang, and it’s newer!!!

Dry-fit the dash until you are happy, I cant remember for sure, but I think the mounting bolt holes are the same, you just have to add on one bolt to the driver side. You’ll have to bend the tabs near the windshield for the upper dash screws fit.
use the whole dash and wiring from the donor, even the console, parking brake frt seats and carpet fits.
Be advised that the fuel sender from the mont will not work with the later mustang gauges, so put the pony tank in your car. make you mind up what type of fuel delivery system you want, if you want efi, and trust me it’s the way to go, the fuel lines from the donor will be a great help, otherwise, remove the pump from the mustang tank, and run a straight tube for the fuel pick-up on the carb engine. Or just punch a hole in the firewall to run the efi wiring loom on the passenger side.
My car was wired for both efi and dura spark for a while, using the brown connector from the mustang loom. I was using a hybrid homemade ignition system for a while, and let me tell you brother, it was the best mod I had done to the old 255 v-8!!! It used a gm hei module and a ford f-350 coil, what a boost in power!!. When it came time for the engine change, it was plug and play!!!!
(By the way, when I did the engine change, I drove the carbed 255 v-8 in at night, drained the oil and water, came back the next morning, and drove the 5.0 sefi out of the workshop the next evening.)
I used the entire wiring loom from my horse into the mont, from one end to the other with a bit of adapting. I also added transistorized directional indicators from a 93 cougar, because I didn’t like the way the mustangs rear brake and turn signal were wired, it looked cheap andnasty
I made my efi loom, as the engine is from a Lincoln, and my dash from a 4 cyl mustang, piss easy, but the mustang part of the loom fits right in the car!!
Do you want manual or auto, the brake pedal mounts are different but they will be a direct exchange whatever you choose. Either way you have to cut a hole in the floor with a jig-saw.
While you’re using the jigsaw, you’ll need to cut-out the parking brake control mounting from the mustang so you can fit it to the mont.
You gotta do something about the brakes, more GO needs more WHOA!! There’s loads of master cylinder booster caliper combos to choose from.
I’m still using 9in drums on the rear, so the crapstang parking brake cables work great. I need calipers and axles for my 8.8.
I know I may have left out loads of things, maybe not in the correct order. Then again, someone else may chip-in. But it was a blast doing these mods, so don’t worry, worrying only slows you down, just ASK, someone will have the info. I think I have a few pix from when I did the jobs, so do some of the other guys. Ive done countless mods to this car, using mostly oem parts.
It still looks like shit, but when I put the key in and twist it, I hear the efi pump humming, another twist, and it’s running. When I turn, its sure and aggressive, when I stop, it’s certain and firm, when I turn the a/c on, it is cold.i know it’s a heap of shit, hey when I go somewhere, barring an accident, I know I’ll be coming home in a 30 year old car.
Just remember most of the greatest hot rods back in the day were built in the driveway or garage, you don’t need a rotisserie, or expensive lifts and cherry pickers. All you need is knowing what you want, a clear plan, good imagination, time and a few bones. if you have a complete donor car, you need even less money!!!
Do what you want to do, take your time and enjoy the experience, after all your car is a reflection of you, that’s why mine looks like a heap of shit from a bad chemical experience prescribed by an undocumented recreational pharmaceutical specialist.

I prefer the original dash and am thinking about how to get it to work in my 96 Park Avenue.

thanks, she seems ok at the moment, im hoping they have this concern under control. they dont seem to know why this is happening, so we literally have to wait & see if it reoccurs.
yeah, if i can figure out how to post them, i throw a few out there.
you could probably fit the dash in any car that is wide enough, the problems begin with making the cluster, speedo, , heater a/c ,steering wheel etc function correctly. then there is the way it would fit by the screen to be considered, you may have to use a big dash mat.
