Well, I found something that I've never come across before. It's a 1979 Fairmont Wagon with a 200 6 cyl and a factory installed 4 speed. I have actually seen one early Fox chassis Mercury Capri with this combo, seen pics of an early Fox chassis Mustang for sale and pics of a Fairmont Futura on another forum with combo. The wagon really caught me off guard though. I am quite intrigued by this car and am very tempted to buy it. Has any one else seen one of these? This is almost as interesting to me as the 1982 Mercury Cougar Wagon.

I saw one one time. It was in a junkyard, it had 20k miles on it, and it had no rust. Hell, it even still had the rubber seal between the top of the grille and the hood. The only problem with it was that the paint was worn off of all of the horizontal surfaces, like it had sat outside its whole life without much attention. I tried to buy the whole thing, but the fucker wouldn't sell it to me. He said that it was too much trouble to find the title, even after I offered him two grand for the damn thing.

By the way, the '80 Fairmont that I'm temporarily placing my good engine/trans/suspension into while I restore the '79 was originally a 200 4-speed.

Also, I have, in the past, gotten parts off of a 4 cyl 4-speed wagon.

Found this rusty 79 wagon three years ago and pulled the SROD 4-speed (3 + OD) & bell from the six. To accommodate the bench seat they mounted the shifter in a more forward position. Took the second interior shot the winter before I pulled it. Read somewhere there were so few manual transmissions from the factory that the tunnel holes were hand torched. A 4-cyl 4-speed parts car I had was cut the same way. Posts on Fordsix.com convinced me the T-5 was a better swap and the bell requires only a little machining. A Capri two rows over also had an SROD/six combo.

Even rarer, I saw a 4 speed 4 cyl zephyr wagon once. Thats cool tho a 4 speed with bench seat. Thats all ford did when the build sheet says certain car gets floor shift, auto or manual, they had a guy with cutting torch and cut a hole in the floor. No pattern to follow just freehand.

I think that the first job you got when you hired in at the factory was torch-cutting the hole in the floor. That's the only way that you can explain the quality of the holes. Well, maybe if the boss saw that you had been out a little late last night and still couldn't see straight, he gave you that job. Nope...a drunk guy who knew how to run a torch would cut better holes. I stand with my first statement.

Later,
Mike.

I doubt the 4-cyl 4-speed combo is all that rare. I've had 4 with that combination. I had 2 boxtops, one Fairmont, one Zephyr. I've also had 2 wagons, one was bought new by my dad in 1980. My present '80 Fairmont wagon has the 2.3L, 4-speed, buckets, is a base model car with the only options being power brakes, cruise control and vent windows. Check it out in my avitar.
