PostSubject: They Only Fabulous To Us   They Only Fabulous To Us Icon_minitimeMon Apr 20, 2009 12:43 am

Our cars mean nothing in the history of Fords.
Last year at "Fabulous Fords Forever", I was mad because they did not showcase 30 years of the Fox Body/Chassis, Fairmonts/Zephyr.
And I sent them a letter months before the show complaining of this oversite that fell on deaf ears.

So this year they were featuring the "70th Anniversary of Mercury". So what does the Milestone display contain?
A whole bunch of Mercury cars from 1939 up to 1969 then we jump to 1996. What happened to the 70's and 80's?
If it wasn't for the Fox, Ford Motor Company would have been out of business by now.

This show and it's organizers do every thing to snub our cars.
I don't care if we are a in minority, these cars had alot to do with Ford's history.
The Ford Probe (really a Mazda) is also a minority car but they had a "30th Anniversary Milestone" display for it.
Unlike the non-existant 30th annivesary milestone of the Fox F/Z last year.
I only saw 2 Probes out of almost 2000 cars at the show.

Other than that, I had a terriffic time talking about my car with the few others that enjoy F/Z's.

The fact that these cars don't have mass appeal is one of the main reason I like them. It's too bad the people in charge of that show missed that opportunity, but you have to admit, you are more likely to find a Probe fan than a Fairmont fan.

No, it just looks like he is.
He is holding some brochure in that hand.
The people that come to this show know not to touch.
I was sitting in the shade with a guy that had a 32 Lincoln worth well over a million dollars there and he was not worried about it. He even drove it to the show.
Most awsome car I've ever seen. Goes up to 100 mph!

That's cool, at least a couple ppl showed some interest, even if those jackhole promoters didn't. Cool Lincoln too!

Red,

I'm basically a Falcon guy. What you are describing is exactly what Falcon and early Comet people felt for decades, until just recently when they started getting more recognition. It could be easily argued that the Falcon saved Fords' bacon at a very tough time in the economy (1960) and after the expensive Edsel debacle.

It seemed the Falcon was surgically removed from any Ford history or cars of significance article or book, and we all felt quite dissed. What was worse is that like the Fairmont, most people seemed to like them at the shows, always commenting about a father or aunt that had one just like it, what a great car it was, and asking why they didn't see more of them. The Fairmont is in almost every way the spiritual successor to the Falcon, replacing the last two Falcon-based cars; the Maverick and Granada.

Lots of parallels, eh?

I'd offer one more thing: I don't mind a bit that Fairmonts are not popular at the moment, I got a near-mint Futura coupe for $1,100 - you'd have a hard time finding a clapped-out Geo Metro so cheap. They look cool, are fun to drive, are just the right size, upgrade parts are in every boneyard, and a tastefully modded one gets vastly more attention at shows than any five 60's muscle cars parked around it. The cars and parts are inexpensive for the moment, but history tells us that won't always be the case, so we are in just the right time to gather up the cars and parts we want for the future.

I agree with you 100%. I had both a 1965 Comet Caliente and a 1971 Comet. I still entertain the idea of getting another 65. besides the Zephyr, it was the best car I have ever owned. And back in the 70's, my Mopar and Chevy friends would make fun of me for owing them.
Look how many people want Falcon's and Comets now.

In the beginning, Mercury advertised the Zephyr as the "new" Comet. And that is why I bought one in 1978. My friend had a 1964 Falcon and he also bought one. Once you own a Falcon or a Comet, you want to hold on to the feeling of that car forever.
That is the feeling I got with my Zephyr. But that series of cars is where the legacy ends.
They tried to say the Contour/Mystique was the successor to the F/Z cars. In my opinion they are nothing like a Falcon/Comet or Fairmont/Zephyr was.

All cars get popular when there are few of them left. It is just hard waiting for that time to come.
I have rooms full of parts and am always looking for more. They are getting harder to find around here.
And "everybody" that I meet at shows had someone in their family that owned one.

Sunday, I met a guy that has been trying to buy one with 30,000 miles on it from some old lady. After seeing mine, he wanted it all the more.

It was kinda screwy, the way the Fairmont kinda is/isn't the natural successor to the Falcon. I mean, it is in spirit, but some of the splits and replacements of the time seem to kinda try to mess with stuff, because some lines overlapped, and some split off wierdly.

For example...

There was the Falcon, and the early Comet. Then, when the Fairlane came out on the mid-size platform, the Comet went to that size, but the Falcon stayed little. Then, the Fairlane turned into the Torino (and got bigger), and the Comet went away, to be replaced by one of it's trim levels, the Cyclone, and the Montego. But the Falcon was on a Torino platform for a half-year somewhere in there, too. Then, the Maverick came out, and the Comet came back. The Cyclone went away, and the Montego kept going. Oh, yeah...the Torino got a cousin, the Elite. It was a Montego body with a different nose. Then, the Torino, Elite, and Montego disappeared, and the LTDII came out, with no Mercury counterpart. Then, the Fox Platform started, and everything changed again....I could be here for hours.

Don't even get me started on Thunderbirds/Cougars/Continentals.

Oh, yeah...I almost forgot...

So, the Fairmont/Zephyr was supposed to directly replace the Maverick/Comet. The Tempo/Topaz was the replacement for the F/Z, and the Contour/Mystique replaced that. The Fusion/Milan replaced the Contour/Mystique.

So a Fusion is a Comet...riiiiight.

At least now, we don't have seven different cars to try to choose from in the same segment. Well, not in a Ford, anyway. Chrysler's a different story.

Later,
Mike.

Actually, the Mercury counterpart was the Cougar. Cougar sedans, wagons, and coupes.

And i do consider my Milan a descendent of my Zeph. Very Happy

I thought that the Cougar was more of a twin to the Thunderbird, but then, they never made a Thunderbird wagon. Hey, someone should do that...mount an 86 T-bird nose on a Mont or LTD wagon. Anyway, I suppose that the Cougar was more aligned with the LTDII than the 'Bird. The bird was the same car as the LTDII anyway.

That was around the time they downsized the T-bird to the mid-size chassis, so they were still twins, sort of. Then when they came out with the Fox Granada/Cougar, that replaced the Granada/Monarch and the LTDII/Cougar.

Here's something you may think is a little ironic.

The Thunderbird had been on a mid-size chassis since the 60s. It actually shared architecture with Fairlanes and Torinos the entire time. When the Torino was uni-body, so was the 'Bird. When the Torino went full-frame (say, about '72 or so), so did the 'Bird. Also, the '72 Lincoln Continental MkIV was a streched Torino.

It's hard to believe that such a big, big car could ever be considered "mid-sized".

I like that too, I love the confused looks on people faces. Cool I dont like that people think its a chevy though... lol

I also like that even though my car is tan and a 4 door, no ricers will line up beside me at a light because they are scared. They stay a car length back LOL

You think that's bad, I had a CHARGER with an AIR GRABBER HOOD not line up with me one night.

It was right after I got the "good" engine in (about 15 or so years ago, way back when a fourteen second car could still be respectable), and I, being all full of myself, pulled up beside this super clean Charger with the "440-6 pack" on the hood, and the Air Grabber up. He was being followed by another fast lookin' Mope.

For those of you that might not know, an back "in the day", Mopar had a hood scoop that folded flat into the hood, and could be opened from inside the car. It was really stealthy when closed, but when opened, the sides were fluorescent orange, with sharks teeth, and the words "Air Grabber" prominently displayed.

Back to the story.

So, like I said, being all full of myself...I look over at the dude (he was in the right lane), and said, "Hey, wanna run 'em?" (Also bear in mind, that I was not fully versed in the ways of "playing it cool" at that time.) So, the fella looks over at me, and commences to laugh. Well, it just so happened that, at that exact moment, the light turned green, and I left. Hard. With just a little bit of spin. Then, when I hit second, I let it really light 'em up. We're talking about a full second or so, maybe two. Of course, after I left, he tried. It didn't do him much good. Sure, his car could've been faster than mine, but I was already gone, right?

The next light was red. I, of course, pulled up with my front tires sitting on the white stripe. I was watching the mirror to see what was what, and the dude stopped about a length and a half short of the line, and just sat there. The guy in the other Mopar had to stop quickly to avoid hitting him, then he backed up a few feet, and pulled up along side. You could see him trying to get the other guy to pull up and give it a go, but the dude wasn't having it. After that, I didn't see them cruising up and down anymore. I think they went home.

I pretty much laughed about that for about a week, and I still get a chuckle out of it when I tell the story. Poor guy with his 440-six pack having Charger (or Challenger, or whatever), getting picked on by punk kids in their Fairmonts....

Later,
Mike.
